A variety of tools are emerging to support asset management. These tools include but are not limited to:
  • Integration of data and systems - interoperability of infrastructure management systems, data integration techniques such as Geographic Information Systems, and techniques for prioritization of investment needs derived from infrastructure management systems such as trade-off analysis.
  • Performance measures - methods for both quantifying the condition of transportation assets and qualitatively analyzing their performance. Key issues include recognizing the appropriate indicators, maintaining consistency, and setting performance thresholds. Another important question is how to integrate these rating methods into the overall management process.
  • Preservation - how to get the resources necessary to preserve transportation infrastructure. It also focuses on overcoming the problems of scheduling work and providing work zone traffic control and detours.
  • Engineering economic analysis - use of economic analysis in the context of transportation asset management. Check the reference tab listings for the Highway Economic Requirement System - State Version, and Life Cycle Cost Analysis.
